OFAC sanctions screening API for AI agents
An AI agent can screen a payee against the U.S. Treasury OFAC sanctions lists with one call to POST https://counterpartycheck.com/v1/screen ($0.05) or as part of a full check at POST https://counterpartycheck.com/v1/check ($0.25). It matches names and aliases with fuzzy matching, checks crypto wallet addresses listed by OFAC, and flags embargoed jurisdictions. No account is needed when paying per call with x402.
What is screened
- Lists: the OFAC Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list and the consolidated non-SDN lists, downloaded from Treasury's Sanctions List Service and refreshed several times a day.
- Names and aliases: fuzzy matching that tolerates word order, punctuation, accents and small spelling differences.
- Crypto wallets: exact matches against wallet addresses OFAC has published for listed parties.
- Jurisdictions: comprehensively embargoed countries and regions, plus elevated-risk jurisdictions.
Example
POST https://counterpartycheck.com/v1/screen
{ "counterparty": { "name": "Northwind Traders LLC", "country": "US" } }
The response gives a verdict, any potential matches with the evidence behind them, and the date of the list snapshot used.
Important limits
A potential match is not a confirmed match. A person must review it against identifying details before deciding. This is a screening aid, not a sanctions compliance program, and it does not replace one where your business needs one.
Frequently asked questions
Can an AI agent check the OFAC list automatically?
Yes. Counterparty Check exposes OFAC screening as a pay-per-call API and an MCP tool (screen_sanctions), so an agent can screen a payee before paying.
How current is the sanctions data?
The OFAC lists are re-downloaded from Treasury several times a day, and every response states the list date used.
Does it screen crypto wallet addresses?
Yes, against the digital currency addresses OFAC publishes for listed parties.
